Disability Awareness for the Community

April 28, 2022 at 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM

Led by Sari Ann Platt, Cultivate Ability, and Joe Stone, Teton Adaptive Sports
Delivered via Zoom

This training is designed to help participants learn how to be better allies of people with disabilities. Workshop leader Sari Ann Platt, Director of Programs & Outreach at Cultivate Ability, will cover topics such as defining disability, addressing common myths and stereotypes, disability etiquette, and how to recognize and avert ableism. Joe Stone, Director of Mission at Teton Adaptive Sports will give an educational spotlight talk on improving event accessibility, both as a way to grow your organization and to emphasize to our community the importance of taking this step. There will be a focus on interaction to encourage participants to wade through new or difficult content together. Interactive features will include breakout rooms, use of the chat function, etc. Live captioning will be provided; please indicate any additional accessibility needs you may have in your registration.

Sari Ann Platt (she/they) has experience working with students with disabilities both at the college level and in a K-12 setting. Sari Ann was diagnosed with Narcolepsy with Cataplexy–an acquired, neurological disability–in their early 20s. From then on, she focused her writing and research on disability, particularly on the challenges of navigating an inaccessible world with an invisible disability and relating that to her experience in wildlife rehabilitation. Their work at Cultivate Ability gives Sari Ann the opportunity to help employers create workplaces with authentic cultures of inclusion with a commitment to removing accessibility barriers.

Joe Stone (he/his) brings a decade of experience as a motivational speaker traveling throughout the country providing keynote and educational presentations for businesses, organizations, large scale events and schools and universities. In 2013, he founded The Joe Stone Foundation, which helps bridge the gap between people with and without disabilities through outdoor recreation. He volunteers as a peer mentor and engages in outdoor activities with people of all abilities.
