Ted Jonke Memorial Soccer Scholarship

JonkeTed. If you knew him, you can't think of him without smiling. His laugh, his exuberance and his total lack of moderation are legendary. Ted first immigrated to Brooklyn, New York with his family via Austria as a refugee from Yugoslavia. His sense of adventure led him to serve in the Peace Corps and to construction projects in the Virgin Islands before finally bringing him to Jackson Hole 34 years ago.

A lover of sports, especially soccer, he confidently joined others in forming a team shortly after he arrived, not at all deterred by a lack of players. They ferreted out the few who were already familiar with the game; the others they cajoled into learning. His determination paid off – but then it always did. Their team, Wilson United, competed in the Intermountain League, winning many championships. Along with his teammates, Ted went on to coach the local kids, inspiring the next generation with his enthusiasm for soccer. As a dedicated volunteer fireman, Ted never missed an opportunity to serve his community. Whatever he focused on – his children, friends, business, sports or me – Ted gave it his all.

After Ted's sudden death in 2000, his stunned friends turned to The Community Foundation to establish the Ted Jonke Memorial Soccer Scholarship. They could think of no better way to honor Ted and his love of this community, his belief in education, and his passion for soccer.

Today, his scholarship program helps members of the High School soccer team pursue their dreams in higher education. None of his friends, our children or I will ever forget him. And because of this scholarship, his contagious love of life will continue to touch those who were never lucky enough to know him.
